The Break Away follows a family through the midst of lockdown, exposing their flaws and insecurities. Something many of us saw happen or experienced during the height of lockdown, myself included. It was frightening then and is sad to reflect on it now. Parents not putting aside their own aspirations for their children. Especially with the new experience of unceasing day-to-day proximity between parent and child. Leading to uncomfortable situations that made me drawback, due to my own personal experiences. The dialogue was insufferable, trite, and inconsequential. Within 5 minutes I was disappointed and wished it would end so I could move on to the following chapters, but then the quiet moments came. Those quiet moments are when the film and Chen shine. But it’s not enough to compensate for the missteps that came before.
