The BAFTAs have always been a little strange, from their formatting, allowing 5 films for Best Picture and 10 for Outstanding British Film, to their recent string of being able to predict the Oscars better than the guilds can. The latter became very apparent last year, when Chadwick Boseman was winning every award possible for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and Anthony Hopkins was getting praise, but not awards, for “The Father”, until the BAFTAs where “The Father” won Best Adapted Screenplay, and Hopkins beat Boseman for Best Actor. Then, about a month or so later, history repeated itself at the Oscars, leading to one of the biggest shocks in recent Oscar history, and I remember that moment, both in fact. I was watching the telecast and as soon as Best Adapted Screenplay was announced and Florian Zeller began giving his acceptance speech, I knew Hopkins was going to win. I was called a madman, and when what I said came to pass, all I could do was watch and tweet. Now the BAFTAs have had their 2022 show and the only major takeaways were to watch for “CODA” to sneak into Best Adapted Screenplay, Will Smith is winning the Oscar, no question, “The Power of the Dog” cannot be stopped, unfortunately, and the editing category is still the hot mess it was coming into the show.
When I said major takeaway, I also meant surprise, and one of the two big surprises of the night was Best Adapted Screenplay going to Siân Heder for “CODA”, beating out what most considered to be the top two frontrunners, Maggie Gyllenhaal for “The Lost Daughter” and Jane Campion for “The Power of the Dog”. Slowly there have been chinks in “The Power of the Dog’s” Oscar campaign for a little while now, no SAG ensemble nomination being the largest blow to its campaign. Now with “CODA” taking a big BAFTA win away from Campion and Co. there is a window for “CODA” to slither in and win 2 out of its 3 Oscar nominations. Besides this, any shot of anyone else winning Best Actor is out the window now, Will Smith winning Best Actor here now secures his Oscar win. The other big surprise win was “No Time to Die” snagging Best Film Editing, beating out the rest of its competitors, with only one of those competitors nominated for an Oscar, “Dune”. As far as other notable wins go, Paul Thomas Anderson took home Best Original Screenplay, hopefully securing his FIRST Oscar win, Hans Zimmer continued his winning streak for Best Original Score for “Dune”, hopefully locking up this category now. Finally “The Power of the Dog” took home Best Director and Best Picture once again, and it seems there is no stopping “The Power of the Dog”, it has taken so many Best Picture & Best Director awards from critics groups, guilds, and general awards show that it seemingly can’t lose at this point.
